How to change the default save location of Microsoft Teams recordings

While team members cannot alter the default save location for recordings, they can instead relocate them. Fortunately, this is by no means a difficult task; in fact, it’s pretty easy.

There is currently no native method for changing the default save location of Microsoft Teams recordings. You can only move a recording after the meeting is finished.

Workaround:

  1. Locate the recording’s link in Microsoft Teams
  2. Open the recording in your browser
  3. Close the media viewer
  4. Select your recording
  5. Click ...>Move to
  6. Path to intended location
  7. Click Move here

In the following post, you will learn to relocate saved recordings via our step-by-step guide. If that doesn’t suit you, we’ll also be instructing you on downloading and locally storing recordings where you wish.

How to move a recording from its default save location (Microsoft Teams)

Step 1 – View your recording in a browser

You can find a meeting summary in the “Posts” tab of your teams’ “General” channel. Within the summary, you can access your recording’s link.

Step 2 – Exit the media player

After clicking the link, your computer will open the file in your browser. The resulting page contains a media player which will display your recording- use the X button in the top right to close it.

Step 3 – Select and move the recording

Closing the media player will reveal a SharePoint documents library; you can spot your recording within its current folder. Select the recording by clicking it, then click additional options ... in the main ribbon, followed by “Move to.”

Step 4 – Specify a location

Using the menu to your screen’s right, navigate toward a suitable directory for your file. Once you’ve pathed to your destination folder, click “Move here.”

How to download a recording from Microsoft Teams

Step 1 – View your recording in a browser

You can find a meeting summary in the “Posts” tab of your teams’ “General” channel. Within the summary, you can access your recording’s link.

Step 2 – Exit the media player

After clicking the link, your computer will open the file in your browser. The resulting page contains a media player which will display your recording- use the X button in the top right to close it.

Step 3 – Download the recording from your SharePoint documents library

Microsoft Teams has stored your recording in the SharePoint document library before you. Click the file to select it, then click “Download” in the action bar.

Step 4 – Choose a folder to locally store your file

Once you hit download, one of two things may transpire. Desirably, your browser will allow you to specify a destination for your file. However, your browser may instead leave your download in a preset local directory depending on setup.

  • If you were not asked to pick a download location but don’t remember altering your browser’s settings, check your “Downloads folder.” Browsers are known to use the said folder as a default download location.
  • Right click the file> select cut> open your intended save location> right click> select paste

Notice

Microsoft Teams provides native support for file downloading. As a result, you’re able to access “Files” from your sidebar, open a file’s additional options ... and hit “Download.”

Post recap

Microsoft Teams meeting attendants can natively record audio and video feedback from a meeting; Microsoft advises you to make others aware when recording them. Teams will store your file in an immutable preset location when you complete a recording. However, this does not stop you from moving the file elsewhere- or saving it where you’d like locally.
