A complete guide to embedding videos in SharePoint Online pages

You might be used to viewing various articles, news posts and browsing images or documents via SharePoint. We’d like to add to that experience by helping you add videos to the list — with the power of embeds. If you’re curious about embeds and how they’d help, we recommend reading onward. 

Solution: 

  1. Open SharePoint site 
  2. Select New > News Post 
  3. Select an appropriate template 
  4. (Optionally) Enter video title and description 
  5. Select Add new webpart > Stream/YouTube
    • For Microsoft Stream select a video from the displayed Stream videos 
    • For YouTube enter the URL for the YouTube video you’d like to embed

Embedding a Microsoft Stream video in SharePoint Online 

Please note, a video you have access to must first be uploaded to Microsoft Stream before you can do this. 

Step 1 – Open your SharePoint site 

  • Before we begin, you’ll first need your SharePoint site open- this can be the initial hub site or any of the associated sub-sites you have posting permissions in. 

Step 2 – Select New News post 

  • Click the New dropdown button to the left of the site taskbar and select the News post option. 

Step 3 – Enter a title post and description 

  • While this is not required, it helps give viewers awareness about what they’re going to be looking at. Similarly, if you need to revisit the post in the future, it will be easier to relocate with a memorable title or informative description. 

Step 4 – Add a Microsoft Steam webpart for your video 

  • Below your description, you’ll find a + button. If it doesn’t immediately appear, trying moving your mouse to its location on the below image. Upon selecting the button, you’ll be met with a pop-out list of options. Scroll until you find Stream, then select it. 

Step 5 – Select the Steam video you’d like to embed 

  • From the new menu you’ll see a selection of uploaded Stream videos you have access to. Simply click one to select it. 

Step 6 – Posting 

  • From the upper right of the post editor select Post news. You’re post will be immediately published and visible to all site members (with required permissions). 

Embedding a YouTube video in SharePoint Online 

Please note, a video must first be uploaded to YouTube before you can do this. 

Step 1 – Open your SharePoint site 

  • Before we begin, you’ll first need your SharePoint site open- this can be the initial hub site or any of the associated sub-sites you have posting permissions in. 

Step 2 – Select New News post 

  • Click the New dropdown button to the left of the site taskbar and select the News post option. 

Step 3 – Enter a title post and description

Step 5 – Enter the URL for your target YouTube video 

  • Below your description, you’ll find a + button. Upon selecting the button, you’ll be met with a pop-out list of options. Scroll until you find YouTube, then select it. We have blurred the video URL for the creator’s privacy. 

Step 6 – Posting 

  • From the upper right of the post editor select Post news. You’re post will be immediately published and visible to all site members (with required permissions). 

Embedding a video in your SharePoint Online homepage 

Step 1 – Open your SharePoint site 

  • Before we begin, you’ll first need your SharePoint site open- this can be the initial hub site or any of the associated sub-sites you have posting permissions in. 

Step 2 – Select edit from the page ribbon 

  • From the page ribbon, select Edit to begin making changes to the page. You may spot it a little below the upper right of the page. 

Step 3 – Add a webpart for your video 

  • With some scrolling you’ll find a + button. Upon selecting the button, you’ll be met with a pop-out list of options. Scroll until you find YouTube, then select it- if you’d like to embed a YouTube video. Otherwise select, Stream

Step 5 – Fill in required webpart fields 

  • For a YouTube video, you’ll need its URL. For a Stream video you’ll just need to select it from your list of available Stream videos

Step 6 – Republish your page 

  • From the upper ribbon select Republish. This will make your changes visible to all site members.
